Sam Houston By: Meredith Sam Houston was born on the 2nd of March 1793. He grew up in the mountains of Tennessee, so he made friends with the Cherokee Indians. He spent most of time with them, a thing he preferred to do over many things. As Houston grew up, he became a private soldier to fight in the second war in England. Also, after he became a soldier, he became a sergeant of a business. After receiving three life threatening wounds, from the Battle of the Horse Shoe Bend, he became the rank of the first lieutenant. He resigned in 1818 to study law. After a while of studying, he was elected to work in the U.S. congress in 1823. Many years later, he was elected to be the governor of Tennessee by many people. In a few years time, he quietly resigned from his pose as governor of Tennessee. After he resigned, he went to live with the Cherokees again. He remained there until 1832, until he moved to Texas with a few friends. Houston, soon after moving to Texas he was elected delegate of Nacogdoches to be in the convention of 1833. Houston immediately took control of Texas forces. Then on April 21, , 1863 his forces defeated Santa Anna’s. In that year, Houston was elected to be the President of the Republic of Texas. In 1841, Houston was again elected president to lead the Texas government. After Texas was made a state in 1845 Sam Houston was removed from office again in 1861.
Houston then retired to his old home in Huntsville, Tennessee. There, he died of old age in July, 1863.
